Psalm 1

The American Standard Version

1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the wicked,

Nor standeth in the way of sinners,

Nor sitteth in the seat of scoffers:

1:2 But his delight is in the law of Jehovah;

And on his law doth he meditate day and night.

1:3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the streams of water,

That bringeth forth its fruit in its season,

Whose leaf also doth not wither;

And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

1:4 The wicked are not so,

But are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

1:5 Therefore the wicked shall not stand in the judgment,

Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

1:6 For Jehovah knoweth the way of the righteous;

But the way of the wicked shall perish.

Psalm 1 Notes:

Psalm 1 serves as the gateway to the entire Psalter, setting the stage for the themes of wisdom, righteousness, and the dichotomy between the just and the wicked that echo throughout the Psalms. It is a meditation on the blessed life and the destiny of those who choose to live by God’s law.

The Psalm opens by contemplating the happiness of the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way of sinners. Instead, this person finds delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. This individual is likened to a tree planted by streams of water, yielding fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever they do prospers, painting a portrait of spiritual vitality and enduring success rooted in adherence to divine wisdom.

In contrast, the wicked are not so but are like chaff that the wind drives away. They lack substance and are unable to withstand judgment or join the assembly of the righteous. The Psalm draws a clear line between the two paths one may walk: one leads to stability and blessing, the other to instability and ruin.

The Psalm concludes with a reflection on the watchful eyes of the Lord, which are upon the righteous and their path. The way of the wicked, however, will perish. This final assertion contrasts the enduring legacy of the righteous with the ultimate futility of the wicked’s way.

Psalm 1, therefore, serves as both a wisdom teaching and a promise. It offers a vision for a life anchored in the joy of God’s word, suggesting that such a life leads to flourishing and growth. Simultaneously, it warns of the emptiness of a life estranged from divine principles. It invites the reader to choose their path wisely, with the assurance that God oversees the way of the righteous.
